How to choose a pre-workout

Pre-workouts come in two broad groups: complete formulas that combine several ingredients in one scoop, and single-ingredient products you dose yourself. Knowing which one fits your training makes the choice easier.

Complete formulas vs single ingredients

  • Stimulant pre-workouts such as Redcon1 Total War, Cellucor C4, MuscleTech Vapor X5 and ProSupps Hyde Nightmare pair caffeine with ingredients that support focus and endurance.
  • Stimulant-free options like Zoomad Labs Moons Truck Zero I suit evening sessions or anyone limiting caffeine.
  • Single ingredients such as citrulline (Rule 1, BioTechUSA), L-arginine (NOW Foods, Thorne, Nutricost) and caffeine capsules or tablets (Nutrex, Nutricost, ALLMAX) let you build your own stack.

What to compare on the label

  • Caffeine per serving: amounts vary a lot between brands, so check the milligrams and count any coffee or energy drinks you have the same day.
  • Citrulline type and dose: see whether the label lists L-citrulline or citrulline malate, and how many grams each serving provides.
  • Disclosed amounts: a fully disclosed label shows the exact dose of every ingredient, while a proprietary blend only gives a total.
  • Servings per container: compare servings, not just tub size.

How people typically use it

Many powdered formulas direct one serving mixed with water about 20 to 30 minutes before training, and many suggest starting with half a serving to gauge tolerance. Do not exceed the serving size on the label, and avoid stimulant formulas late in the day. If you are pregnant, nursing, sensitive to caffeine or have a medical condition, speak with your doctor first.

Pre-workout questions

Do I need a pre-workout to train?

No. A pre-workout is optional; sleep, food and consistent training matter more. Some people use one on days when they want extra support for energy and focus.

What does stimulant-free mean?

It leaves out caffeine and similar stimulants and usually relies on ingredients such as citrulline, which supports nitric oxide production and blood flow during exercise.

Can I take a pre-workout with creatine?

Many people do, since the two serve different roles. Check whether your pre-workout already contains creatine and follow each label. Browse our creatine range or read the full pre-workout guide.
