Magnesium is one of the most requested supplements in our Dbayeh store — and one of the most confusing to buy. Walk into any pharmacy and you will find glycinate, citrate, malate, threonate and oxide sitting next to each other at very different prices. They are not interchangeable.
Here is a plain explanation of what separates them, so you can pick the right one instead of the most expensive one.
First: why the form matters
Magnesium on its own is a mineral that the body absorbs poorly. So supplements bind it to another molecule — glycine, citric acid, malic acid, threonic acid — and that partner molecule changes two things: how well the magnesium is absorbed, and how it tends to feel.
That is why two bottles both labelled "Magnesium 500 mg" can behave completely differently.
One more detail worth knowing: the number on the front of the bottle is often the weight of the whole compound, not the magnesium itself. A tablet listing "Magnesium Glycinate 500 mg" may contain around 100 mg of actual magnesium. Always read the "elemental magnesium" figure on the label.
Magnesium Glycinate — the gentle all-rounder
Magnesium bound to glycine, an amino acid. This is the form most people are looking for when they search for magnesium in Lebanon, and for good reason: it is well absorbed and it is the least likely to upset your stomach. Glycine itself is associated with relaxation, which is why glycinate is the form usually taken in the evening.
Typically chosen by: people who want a daily magnesium without digestive side effects, and people who take it at night.
In our store: Magnesium Glycinate — including NOW Foods Magnesium Glycinate (90 and 180 tablets), Swanson Albion Magnesium Glycinate, Doctor's Best High Absorption Magnesium Lysinate Glycinate, Novadiet Magnesium Bisglycinate, and a Nutricost powder if you prefer mixing it into a drink. Prices start at $28.
Magnesium Citrate — the affordable and widely available one
Magnesium bound to citric acid. Absorption is good and the price is usually the lowest of the well-absorbed forms. Its well-known characteristic is a laxative effect at higher doses — helpful for some people, inconvenient for others. Start low if you are new to it.
Typically chosen by: people who want good absorption on a budget, and those who also want the digestive effect.
In our store: NOW Foods Magnesium Citrate (200 mg tablets, softgels and capsules), Life Extension Magnesium Citrate. From $30.
Magnesium Malate — the daytime option
Magnesium bound to malic acid, a compound involved in the body's energy production cycle. It is well absorbed, gentle on the stomach, and is the form people tend to take in the morning rather than at night. It is also popular with people who train and with those who experience muscle soreness.
Typically chosen by: people who want magnesium during the day, and anyone who found glycinate too relaxing for morning use.
In our store: NOW Foods Magnesium Malate (841 mg and 1,000 mg), Swanson Magnesium Malate 1,000 mg. From $29.
Magnesium L-Threonate — the expensive specialist
The newest form, and the only one specifically studied for its ability to raise magnesium levels in the brain. This is the form sold as Magtein or Neuro-Mag, and it is studied in the context of memory and cognitive function. It costs considerably more per bottle and it delivers less elemental magnesium than the others, so it is not the form to choose if your goal is simply to cover a daily requirement.
Typically chosen by: people specifically interested in cognitive support, who are willing to pay for it.
In our store: Swanson Magnesium L-Threonate, Life Extension Neuro-Mag, Source Naturals Magtein, NOW Foods Magtein. From $50.
Magnesium Oxide — cheap, but poorly absorbed
The form found in most supermarket and low-cost pharmacy products. It contains a high percentage of elemental magnesium by weight, but the body absorbs only a small fraction of it. The rest stays in the digestive tract, which is why oxide is mostly used for its laxative effect rather than for raising magnesium levels.
Our honest take: if you are buying magnesium to actually top up your magnesium, oxide is not the efficient choice. We stock it (21st Century Magnesium Oxide, $24) because some people specifically want it, but glycinate or citrate is usually the better buy.
Quick comparison
| Form | Absorption | Stomach-friendly | Usually taken | From |

| Oxide | Low | Laxative effect | Any time | $24 |
What about magnesium complexes?
Some products combine two or three forms in one tablet — Swanson Triple Magnesium Complex ($15) is the common example. A complex is a reasonable starting point if you do not want to choose, but note that splitting the dose across three forms means you get less of each. If you already know what you want from magnesium, a single-form product is usually the more direct option.
How much, and when
Most magnesium supplements provide between 100 mg and 400 mg of elemental magnesium per daily serving. Follow the dose printed on your bottle rather than a number from the internet, since the elemental content varies so much between products.
Taking it with food reduces the chance of stomach upset. If you are taking it for evening relaxation, 30 to 60 minutes before bed is the usual timing.
Before you buy
Magnesium interacts with several common medications, including some antibiotics and certain blood pressure and heart medications, and people with reduced kidney function need medical advice before supplementing. If you take regular medication or have a health condition, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before starting. This article is general information, not medical advice.
