How to choose a creatine supplement

Forms of creatine

Creatine monohydrate is the most widely researched form and makes up most of this collection, with options from Nutrex, MuscleTech Platinum, BioTechUSA, NOW Foods and Double Wood Supplements. Micronized monohydrate from ALLMAX, BPI Sports, Muscle Rulz and Nutritech is milled into finer particles so it mixes more easily. Creapure, used in the Vplab Elite powder, is a branded monohydrate produced in Germany. You will also find tablets from Metabolic Nutrition and blended formulas such as MuscleTech Cell-Tech, which adds carbohydrates.

What to compare on the label

  • Creatine per serving: most powders provide 3 to 5 g per scoop, so check the serving size rather than the tub weight.
  • Servings per container: tubs range from about 45 to 120 servings, so compare cost per serving, not just size.
  • Flavored or unflavored: unflavored powder disappears into a shake or juice, while flavored options such as Zoomad Labs One Raw Creatine can be mixed with plain water.
  • Other ingredients: blends and stacks may add sugars or other actives, so read the full ingredient list.

How people typically use it

Most labels suggest a daily serving of around 3 to 5 g, taken on training and rest days, mixed into water, juice or a whey protein shake. Some labels describe an optional loading phase at a higher dose for the first days. Drink enough water through the day and follow the directions on your specific product.

Creatine questions

Is micronized creatine different from regular monohydrate?

It is the same creatine monohydrate, milled finer so it disperses more evenly in liquid and feels less gritty. The amount of creatine per gram does not change.

Does creatine contain caffeine?

Plain creatine monohydrate does not. If you want caffeine and other pre-training ingredients, browse our pre-workout collection and check each label.

Should anyone check with a doctor first?

Anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, managing a kidney condition or taking medication should speak to a healthcare professional before using creatine.
